Winter
Are Winter Tires Important ? Quebec's provincial government thinks so. Winter tires have been mandatory in Quebec since December 2009. If you are like most vehicle owners, you probably have "all-season" tires on your vehicle. While they are designed to work in most driving conditions, they are not as suitable in heavy snow, hard packed snow and icey conditions as a purpose designed winter tire.
Why is that you ask ? All-season tires begin to lose their grip when the temperature drops below +7°C ! Winter tires are made for cold and snowy conditions, using specialised rubber compounds and unique grip patterns. They remain more flexible than all-season tires in sub-zero temperatures and the deeper tread pattern allows the tire to clear itself of snow and slush as it rotates.
Tires marked with this symbol meet the requirements for excellent snow traction performance. They are designed for driving in snowy conditions.
In 2002 the Quebec Ministry of Transport conducted back to back tests of popular all-season tires versus winter tires across 5cm deep snow at -20 degree's. The tests results speak for themselves:
- Sub-compact; stopping distance reduced from 50.7m to 39.1m (29% shorter distance)
- Minivan; stopping distance reduced from 51.1m to 38.3m (33% shorter distance)
- 4x4/SUV; stopping distance reduce from 42.8m to 35.7m (20% shorter distance)
The safety gained from dedicated winter tires far outweighs the cost. You are also far less likely to become stuck due to bad traction, saving you aggrivation and towing costs. And consider this, using a set of summer tires and winter tires you effectively double your tire life!
